Originally organized by Aditya. Did Jesus Christ actually rise from the dead? To most of us in the modern world, the question is almost so ridiculous that it's not even worth asking. Sure, Jesus may have had a few insightful moral teachings. It may even be the case that some find comfort and guidance from faith in Jesus. But to say that a 33 year old man from the backwaters of Galilee in the first century AD literally died, was buried, and miraculously came back to life is, at the very least, a bit ridiculous. In this talk, Aditya Prathap will be making the case for why the resurrection of Jesus Christ is not only not ridiculous, but is in fact the only rational explanation of the objective historical data. The talk will cover what is known as the Minimal Facts Argument. Concepts and sources that will be discussed include but are not limited to the following: What Tacitus' comments on Christ in Annals (116 AD) tells us about the crucifixion of Christ. What records of early Christian persecution from Suetonius (112 AD) and Pliny the Younger (121 AD) and the creed cited by the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Corinthians (54 AD) reveal about the sociopolitical landscape surrounding early Christians and its corresponding incentive structure. Analysis of the medical literature relevant to common natural explanations of the historical data, including grief-induced hallucinations, mass hallucinations, and the symptoms of asphyxiation, the primary mechanism of death in Roman crucifixion. Scholarly frameworks used to identify the reliability of data, e.g., the criterion of embarrassment. People of any religious background or lack thereof are welcome to join. Skepticism and pushback are encouraged. No background in history or theology is needed. The talk will last ~45 minutes, followed by Q&A. Aditya is a Christian living in San Francisco. Raised Hindu, he became an atheist after growing disillusioned with organized religion. After over a year of investigating the historical evidence for Christianity to prove that it had no rational justification, Aditya became convinced of the historicity of the resurrection of Jesus and was baptized in 2019.
