Originally organized by st-Art. A Big Dill: a day of art, food and stories. For America’s National Pickle Day, we’re bringing a little New York to Amsterdam with paintings on the walls, food to share and plenty of stories around the table. Our special guest is Harvey Herman, a 93-year-old New York artist who sold “pickles for a nickel” as a boy. Today he paints them, still eats one every day and swears they’re the secret to his endless energy! Meet Harvey, explore his pickle paintings and a selection of his other work, and discover the food traditions connecting New York and Amsterdam. The day 11am · Come on in Browse the art, taste some pickles and settle in for light bites and conversation. 12pm · Two cities, hundreds of pickle stories Join the authors of The Pickled City for the family stories behind Amsterdam’s love of pickles, De Leeuw’s generations of pickle making and the connections between Amsterdam and New York. 1pm · Where art meets food Artist and lifelong pickle lover Harvey Herman joins Carlo from st-Art to talk about painting the everyday, from the humble pickle to finding beauty in the things around us. 2–4pm · Neighborhood aperitivo Gather over prosecco, deli bites and music and make some friends. Made with the neighbors Pickle knowledge and history from Paul and Monique, authors of The Pickled City. Pickles from De Leeuw. Alcohol-free drinks mixed by Happy Tea. New York-style sandwiches by Leylani Lewis. Presented by st-Art Amsterdam and Four Bent Corners. Free entry. RSVP so we know how many mouths to feed. Walk-ins welcome - stay all day or pop in for a taste. Venue: st-Art Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, NL. Registration is handled by the original organizer.
